Akimi Yoshida’s Umimachi Diary Wins 2013’s Manga Taisho Award

This year’s Manga Taisho (Cartoon Grand Prize) results were announced at a ceremony in Tokyo yesterday. Akimi Yoshida’s Umimachi Diary took the prize. Yoshida launched the manga in Shogakukan’s Monthly Flowers magazine in 2006. The manga follows three sisters who live in the seaside city of Kamakura. They learn of the death of their father, years after he divorced their mother and left the family. At their father's funeral, they meet their half-sister for the first time.


Yoshida thanked everyone for the award this year. She drew the following illustration upon receiving the award:



Manga Taisho is a yearly event held by a special committee formed by the managers of bookstores’manga sectors. The criteria is that the manga must be released during the course of the year and have run less than eight volumes. Last year, Hiromu Arakawa received the honor for her Silver Spoon manga. The committee nominated 11 works this year.
